The necklace comprises individually knotted natural turquoise gem stones. There was also a lot of Zuni jewellery in amongst it.
With this information we feel this strand of turquoise most likely came from North America. There is some age associated with the strand but we cannot say when it was made.
The turquoise is mainly a duck egg blue with many brown veins. We have never seen a strand like this before. The strand was originally threaded on a coated wire which over time had worn through so the wires were rubbing against the gemstone. The original hook over loop clasp was insecure and bent well out of shape from the weight of the strand. We have had the strand professionally re threaded on durable thread, double knotted and secured with a sturdy new sterling silver bolt ring clasp. The strand is quite heavy and weighs just under 400gms. Taking a generous amount off for the thread and the clasp say even 380gms or around 1900 carats of natural turquoise. That makes each stone around 65 carats each.
The necklace is 840mm long and the stones measure 25mm to 35mm. Please note this item is original and not a copy or modern day reproduction. It is also for sale in our shop Emprades vintage + design in Clarendon, South Australia, and on our website.
